There’s been a lot of fuss over Harvey Nichols’ new ad campaign that literalises the notion of wetting yourself with excitement. As with all these kinds of things, the debate – such as it is – is one of extremes: either you find it disgusting or you’re just po-faced and humourless.
I don’t find it disgusting. I’ve seen many worse things than people with damp patches. What I do find offensive though is the craven attention-seeking behind it, the tired schoolboy silliness, the obvious “all publicity is good publicity” crap. But worse – much worse – is letting all of that trump any genuine creativity or any thought to what Harvey Nichols actually stands for. It’s a campaign you’d expect a couple of students to come up with.
But then again… it really annoyed the ridiculous Cristina Odone, who bizarrely puts it down to Leftism. And anything that upsets her gets my thumbs up.
